Welcome to the Garritan Personal Orchestra - Logic 7 Tutorial. This tutorial will breifly describe how to quickly get started using GPO with Apple's LOGIC 7 software. Many thanks to Kevin Rix for writing this informative tutorial which is sure to be a help to Logic 7 Users.

1. Open Logic. (The rest of Step 1 is optional, if you would rather start with the default song proceed to Step 2). Close the default song by selecting close in the file menu or use the key command (option-cmd-W). Select "New" in the File menu or press "cmd-N". In the "New" window, make sure that "create project folder" is enabled and type in a new name. For the purpose of this tutorial I called the song "GPO Project." Then choose a location for the project. Press "OK". Logic will proceed to create a new project folder containing song files, audio files, backup, etc.

2. When the new arrange window appears, delete all but one track. This will give us a clean slate to work with. Click on the last remaining track and make sure it's set to an "audio instrument"

3. Make sure that the midi channel is set to "1" in the track settings on the left side of the arrange page.

4. Now it's time to open the GPO Audio Unit plug-in. In the arrange window's channel strip, click on the slot just below where it says "I/O." In the pop up menu select "stereo>AU instruments>Native Instruments>Garritan Personal Orchestra."

5. Next, load a GPO instrument by clicking the "Load" button on the left hand side of the GPO Player. I choose the beautiful Solo Violin #3. When the Instrument is finished loading, make sure it's midi channel is set to "1".

6. In Logic's Arrange window , make sure the track's record button is enabled. Move the mod wheel and start playing.

7. Rename the track to the GPO instrument that you just loaded by pressing "shift" and double clicking where it says "Inst 1".

8. Now let's record. Hit the record button on the transport bar and start playing. When we're done recording the arrange window will look something like this. Rewind to the beginning and hit play on the transport bar or by pressing "0" then "enter" and listen to what we just recorded.

9. To edit our performance, open the track in the Matix window. Do this by selecting the newly recorded track in the Arrange window, then select "Matrix Edit" in the Windows menu or by pressing "cmd-6". The matrix window will allow you to view and edit your performance. Also, by selecting View>Hyperdraw>Modulation from the Matrix menu or by using the key command "shift-F1" the Mod Wheel controller data will be visible for further editing. Other controller data can be accessed by pressing the arrow on the left hand side of the hyperdraw window.

10. In order to take advantage of GPO's multi-instrumental capabilities, let's load in a second instrument. We'll basically be repeating the same process with a couple of changes. From the Arrange window's file menu select "create new instrument" or use key command "Control-return".

11. Click on the track 2 icon to access the pop up window and make sure it's also set to Inst 1 like in step 2. Then change the midi channel to "2".

12. Notice how GPO is already loaded in the channel strip of the new track. Open GPO by double clicking on the "Garritan P" in the channel strip. Load another instrument in the second slot of the GPO plug-in. Make sure the new instrument in GPO is set to midi channel 2

13. Rename Track 2 in Logic's arrange window to the new GPO instrument that was loaded. Arm the track, move the mod wheel, and start playing.

14. When GPO's 8 channel's are exhausted, just create a new track in Logic's arrange window and set it to "Inst 2" and load another instance of GPO. Now you will have 8 more Garritan instruments to add to your arsenal. Just make sure that your midi track settings in Logic correspond to the midi settings in GPO. Logic 7 is an extensive program with a variety of new features. I recommend spending time with the manual to become familiar with it's many varied capabilities. By adding GPO to the mix enables the user to fully realize orchestral creations with sonic realism.

Have fun!
